Politics in Maharastra
There was a political crisis in Maharashtra, a state in India.
As no political party was able to prove their majority in the legislative assembly, the President's rule was imposed in the state following recommendation by the Governor.
Later the President's rule was revoked and the Bharatiya Janta Party led by Devendra Fadnavis formed the government with help of a faction of Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar. The government formation was challenged by other parties including Shiv Sena, Indian National Congress and the faction of Nationalist Congress Party led by Sharad Pawar.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has 288 seats.
In 2019 Vidhan Sabha election, Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) won 105 seats, Shiv Sena won 56, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 54 while Indian National Congress won 44. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and Samajwadi Party (SP) won two seats each while Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) won one seat each. Total 23 seats were won by other parties and independents. 145 seats are required to prove the majority in the legislative assembly to form the government.
BJP and Shiv Sena had contested the election under Maha Yuti alliance also known as National Democratic Alliance (NDA) while NCP and INC had contested under Maha-aghadi alliance also known as United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
